How to Prepare for a Job Interview
Mastering Your Interview Prep
While your qualifications certainly have a role, a big part of job application success is nailing the interview with solid preparation. First, you’ll want to research the organisation itself, looking particularly at recent financials, corporate values and team structure.
Then start rehearsing the articulation of your experience in the context of the job description. Be sure you have several concrete examples that can show your competencies or technical skills, as well as soft skills.
Key Questions and Strategies for Answering
1. “Tell me about yourself.”
This question is one you can count on getting in just about any interview. Here, you want to present your response in the framework of your present role, how you’ve achieved or excelled there, and your future aspirations or goals. Keep things simple and concise, and be sure you’re tailoring your answer to the finance and accountancy industry.
2. “What is your greatest strength?”
They aren’t looking for a humble brag here, they’re going to be focused on hearing how your proficiencies can help the organisation. You’ll want to choose a skill like “skilled in financial modelling” or “attention to detail”. Then, elaborate with an example or scenario, such as forecasting accuracy improvements.
3. “How do you handle tight deadlines?”
This is another interview classic. Describe your time-management system—prioritisation matrix, stakeholder update process—and give them an example of a successful close cycle in a stressful or high-pressure situation.
4. “Describe a challenge you overcame.”
A great way to ace this question is to use the STAR (Situation, Task, Action, Result) method to answer. Focus on a situation like resolving a reconciliation discrepancy or rolling out a new accounting system.
5. “Why are you interested in this role?”
This is an easy question that allows you to align your career goals with the organisation’s mission and the responsibilities of the role. This can be a perfect chance to show enthusiasm and sector knowledge.
