A Guide to Hiring the Right Employees

It has never been more important to make sure you hire the right people for your business. With competition coming from every corner of the globe and technology changing at breakneck speed you need employees that can help you achieve your long-term goals while also being a good fit with the rest of your staff. Working with JMF Associates is a step in the right direction to a successful hire. We’re the experts in finance, accountancy and bookkeeping recruitment and have helped businesses great and small fill their staffing needs across all sectors and areas of finance.

Six Steps to Making Sure You Hire the Right Employees

If your company is to excel in the 21st-century business environment you need to onboard the right people. Below, the team at JMF Associates provide 6 steps for making sure the people you extend job offers to are the right ones.

1: Understand your company's culture

Every company has a culture. Yes, even yours. Before you can hire someone who will pay long-term dividends, you need to thoroughly understand that culture. Do this by asking a few key questions:

A. What is the company’s mission?
B. What are the values of the company?
C. What is the common thread that binds your current staff members?

By defining your company culture, it will be easier to separate the good matches from those with the talents but not the temperament.

2: Make sure your job descriptions are accurate and detailed

Start by looking at the job description. In order to attract the right people, the job description must be accurate and detailed. Avoid speaking in generalities and instead focus on what you do and exactly what you expect from the new hire.

3: Be ready when candidates arrive for interviews

Not only do we encourage our candidates to prepare for interviews we also advise our clients to prepare. Preparation in this case includes creating an evaluation form you can use to compare candidates, not going into the interview cold, (i.e. making sure your read their CV and cover letter and prepare questions related to their experience), and perhaps bringing others in on the process, such as the head of the department where the candidate will be working.

4: Get to know the candidate

The CV and cover letter are a good starting point, but to make sure the person you hire is a good match for your company you need to get to know something about them. Something about their aspirations and preferences. For example, you don’t want to find out after the fact that the person you expect to be in the office Monday-to-Friday wants to work from home 3 days a week.

5: Insist on references

Once the candidate supplies references, make sure you verify them. While references may be considered out-of-date or unfashionable by some, if you can speak to the referee or email then direct this could provide a better insight into that persons work ethic.

6: Work with the right recruitment agency

JMF Associates are more than an employment agency. We’re a privately owned recruitment firm specialising in the placement of highly skilled finance professionals. We take the time to screen our candidates carefully and prioritise placements that will produce long-term benefits for both candidate and company.
