Legal Cashier Recruitment

Legal Cashier Recruitment

The Legal Cashier does the books for a law practice. They work closely with the firm's Finance team and are typically responsible for processing account transactions.

In the past, a partner might bring in a trusted aunt to perform the job of Legal Cashier. Those days are behind us. Today, law firms look for people with prior bookkeeping experience, familiarity with SRA account rules and other professional qualifications. When they want to find a Legal Cashier they can count on, they trust JMF Associates for Legal Cashier recruitment.

Legal Cashier Recruitment: Responsibilities

The day to day responsibilities of a Legal Cashier will vary from firm to firm but typically include most or all of the following:

• Monitoring transactions between the firm and clients.
• Consulting with partners on financial concerns.
• Overseeing the company's cash flow.
• Keeping an accurate record of financial transactions.
• Aiding the partners or owner in developing financial strategies.
• Managing the accounts system.
• Interfacing with clients regarding payments due and payments received.
• Making sure all transactions adhere to SRA account rules.

Depending on the circumstances the Legal Cashier may be asked to assume additional responsibilities.

Legal Cashier: Qualifications

In the past many a firm hired a trusted relative of a partner to handle the books. Today, that has changed. While there are no industry-wide qualifications for the position it is recommended that the job candidate have a background in accounting.

In lieu of that the Institute of Legal Finance & Management offer a diploma course which consists of two parts:

• The basics of bookkeeping - This introduces the aspiring Legal Cashier to double-entry bookkeeping. This part of the course may take up to 18 months to complete.
• SRA accounting rules - This part of the course familiarises the candidate with Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) accounting rules.

Again, it is not required by law that one takes this course. But it is widely recognised and will give you a leg up on other, less qualified people.
